Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
