The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
