RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
